Your path to licensed

How to become a Real Estate Sales Associate in Florida

  1. Step 1

Make sure you meet all the state requirements!

    • Be 18 years of age or older
    • Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
    • Have a United States Social Security number
    • Be honest and truthful
  2. Step 2

Register and complete the 63-hour pre-licensing course from a Florida Real Estate Commission (FREC) approved course provider

    • You must complete the state-required 63-hour Sales Associate pre-licensing course, covering real estate principles, practices, and Florida license law, and pass the end-of-course exam with a score of 70% or better
  3. Step 3

Complete your Sales Associate exam and licensing application

Once you've completed the required pre-licensing education you can apply for your licensing exam! The application process includes submitting your application to the Florida DBPR, paying the fees, and getting your electronic fingerprints taken for the background check! Don't worry, Premier Courses can help you navigate the paperwork!

This is important! You MUST pass the state exam within 2 years of completing your pre-licensing course, or the course expires and you’ll have to take it again!

  4. Step 4

Take and Pass the Florida Sales Associate License Exam

The state exam is administered by Pearson VUE. To pass the test you'll need a score of 75% or better! But don't worry, you're going to ace it!

  5. Step 5

Choose a broker to activate your license with!

Once you pass the test you're officially a real estate sales associate! Your license is issued in inactive status until you affiliate with a licensed Florida broker — so pick a brokerage that matches your needs and expectations, activate your license, and start building your business.

What is Florida post-licensing education?

Florida requires every new real estate sales associate to complete 45 hours of FREC-approved post-licensing education before their first license renewal.

Post-licensing builds on what you learned in the pre-license course with the practical, day-to-day knowledge you need in your first years in the business — and it's required to keep the license you worked so hard to earn.

When is my post-licensing deadline?

Your initial Florida license expires 18 to 24 months after it's issued — the exact date (March 31 or September 30) is printed on your license and shown in your DBPR account at www.myfloridalicense.com.

You must complete all 45 hours of post-licensing education before that first expiration date. Don't wait until the last minute — leave yourself time to finish the course and for your completion to be reported to the DBPR.

What happens if I don't complete post-licensing on time?

If you don't complete the 45-hour post-licensing requirement before your first renewal deadline, your Florida sales associate license becomes null and void.

To become licensed again, you would have to start over: retake the 63-hour pre-license course and pass the state exam again. Completing your post-licensing on time is much easier.

Can I complete my post-licensing online?

Yes! Premier Courses' 45-hour post-licensing course is delivered fully online and is self-paced, so you can study on your own schedule from any device and pick up right where you left off.

What is the difference between post-licensing and continuing education?

Post-licensing is a one-time, 45-hour requirement that must be completed before your first license renewal.

Continuing education (CE) is the ongoing requirement that kicks in after that: 14 hours every two-year renewal cycle, consisting of 3 hours of Core Law, 3 hours of Ethics and Business Practices, and 8 hours of specialty education.

Is Premier Courses approved by the Florida Real Estate Commission?

Yes, Premier Courses' 45-hour online Sales Associate Post-License course is approved by the Florida Real Estate Commission (School ID #ZH1003192). That means our course fulfills your entire Florida post-licensing education requirement.

How do I take my final course exam?

You can complete your final exam online in the comfort of your own home. You'll need a desktop computer or laptop and a current government-issued photo ID to verify your identity before the exam begins.

What do I do after I finish my post-licensing course?

When you complete the course and pass the final exam, your completion is reported electronically to the DBPR and you'll receive a certificate for your records.

Then simply renew your license before your expiration date through your DBPR account at www.myfloridalicense.com and pay the renewal fee.

After this first renewal, you'll move onto Florida's standard continuing education cycle: 14 hours of CE every two years.
