How to become a Real Estate Sales Associate in Florida

Step 1
Make sure you meet all the state requirements!
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Have a United States Social Security number

Step 2
Register and complete the 63-hour pre-licensing course from a Florida Real Estate Commission (FREC) approved course provider
- You must complete the state-required 63-hour Sales Associate pre-licensing course, covering real estate principles, practices, and Florida license law, and pass the end-of-course exam with a score of 70% or better

Step 3
Complete your Sales Associate exam and licensing application
Once you've completed the required pre-licensing education you can apply for your licensing exam! The application process includes submitting your application to the Florida DBPR, paying the fees, and getting your electronic fingerprints taken for the background check! Take and Pass the Florida Sales Associate License Exam
The state exam is administered by Pearson VUE. To pass the test you'll need a score of 75% or better! But don't worry, you're going to ace it!

What are Florida's continuing education requirements?
After your first license renewal (when post-licensing is complete), Florida requires every sales associate to complete 14 hours of FREC-approved continuing education during each two-year renewal cycle.
The 14 hours consist of:
- 3 hours of Core Law
- 3 hours of Ethics and Business Practices
- 8 hours of specialty education
When do I need to complete my CE?
Your CE must be completed before your license expiration date — March 31 or September 30, every two years, depending on your renewal cycle. Your exact date is printed on your license and shown in your DBPR account at www.myfloridalicense.com.
Don't wait until the last minute — leave yourself time to finish the course and for your completion to be reported to the DBPR before you renew.
What happens if I don't complete my CE on time?
If you don't complete your CE and renew on time, your Florida sales associate license becomes involuntarily inactive. While inactive, you can't legally perform any real estate services that require a license.
Reactivating gets harder the longer you wait: after more than 12 months inactive, you'll need to complete a 28-hour reactivation course instead of the standard 14 hours. And if the license stays inactive for more than two years, it becomes null and void.
Can I complete my CE online?

Do sales associates and brokers have the same CE requirement?
Yes. Once past their first (post-licensing) renewal, Florida sales associates and brokers have the same continuing education requirement: 14 hours every two years, made up of 3 hours of Core Law, 3 hours of Ethics and Business Practices, and 8 hours of specialty education.
Are any licensees exempt from the 14-hour CE requirement?
Yes — an attorney who is an active member in good standing of The Florida Bar is exempt from the 14-hour continuing education requirement.

Completion Requirement Policy

Online Course Identification Requirements
Before taking your end-of-course final exam, you'll be asked to verify your identity with a current government-issued photo identification, such as:
- A current Florida driver's license.
- A current identification card issued by a state or U.S. government agency.
- A current passport.
The name on your identification must match the name on your course registration.
Reporting Your Course Completion
When you complete the course and pass the final exam, you'll receive a certificate of completion and your course completion is reported electronically to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
You can verify your education record at any time through your DBPR online account at www.myfloridalicense.com.
